Air, hotel, car and taxes for under $500 per person for a holiday long weekend. Amazing! Perhaps I should mention it's not really a hotel.... it's an AMAZING world class resort. It's the Arizona Biltmore. Do follow the link to observe the luxury! Do check out Trip Advisor to see all the glowing recommendations.
There are some other fabulous resorts in the area, but none quite as good a deal this time around.
Do check out Allegiantair.com for some great deals on September travel from your local US border city.

Phoenix/Scottsdale for Thanksgiving?

Quickie travel update
Allegiant Air (from Minot & Grand Forks) have a few bargains on the website right now. Should anyone wish to go GF to Orlando, there are some $50 flights (one way. With taxes $71) available in May. Also, looks like similar bargains to last year available to Phoenix/Mesa the first two weeks of September 2012 - if you are able to book early and commit now.
Vegas looks like it's running about $350-400 per person, round trip for 4 nights most of the spring and early summer. No bargains jumping out at me in that regard, but always a fair price.
Also note that just this week, Allegiant opened up their booking window to Nov 13, 2012. So, if you're so inclined, you could grab a decent price on September or October long weekend travel, before demand drives up the price.

I Spy a Bargain
Las Vegas, NV |
We recently flew to Phoenix, AZ on Allegiant Airlines. Their package price was outstanding and we managed a quick 5 star vacation on a 2 star budget. What could be better than that?
In my latest round of searching for travel bargains I saw a Las Vegas gem. I won't be going, but YOU might like to.
It is four nights, leaving on a Sunday and returning on a Thursday near the first week of March. You would fly out of Minot, ND on a moderately sized plane (about 150 passengers.) It is a direct flight of less than 3 hours. Included in this price is shuttle transportation to the hotel, from the Las Vegas airport. Typical shuttles are NOT my idea of a good time, but if you've ever seen the taxi line-up in Vegas, you would consider a shuttle.
The taxi stand line is a winding "cattle chute" and you typically wait 40 minutes or more in line. If it's hot and you're tired from the flight, anything other than the taxi line will look good.
Anyways, for these dates you can choose a cheaper hotel. The Flamingo Hilton (on The Strip) would be about $100 less per person. However, it's not a new or newer hotel. Since I prefer 5 star, at 2 star price, I would encourage you to look at places like PH (Planet Hollywood). It is dead centre on The Strip and absolutely the centre of the action. Lots of beautiful people at PH.
Lights of Planet Hollywood Hotel |
The Tropicana is at the MGM/Luxor/New York corner. It's the last hotel I stayed at and LOVED. The Tropicana is Canadian owned (little known fact) and just had big money renovations. It is tropical themed, the rooms are very nice, the pool is very happening, and the restaurant Bacio (Italian food) was absolutely amazing. Seriously, chef Carla Pellegrino prepared one of the best meals of my life. It was so good. Hell, I'd go to Vegas just for another meal at Bacio.
The Tropicana is priced at $296 for March 4-8, per person, plus taxes and shuttle. So per couple it would be $706.10. AHHHHHHH. That is so cheap. I want to go now!
Pool at Tropicana |
But I am going to suggest VDARA Resort and Spa in this instance, because Vdara is also in the centre of The Strip. It is one of the very newest and most posh hotels ever. I can't actually say I've ever seen it so cheap. Vdara is different because it is all suites, plus it does NOT have a casino. It is also one of the only Vegas hotels that is non-smoking. Lastly, if you book these particular dates (or several others this late winter) they are offering 2 free show tickets. There are several shows on the list to choose from, like Criss Angel (yes I spelled that correctly), Zumanity or Terry Fator. Tickets to these shows are at least $100 value.
If you want to gamble conveniently, Bellagio is right next door to Vdara. And, in my experience, gambling at Bellagio is worth it for the premium adult beverages. Nothing is watered down at Bellagio. Order a Baileys on the rocks and you get about 2 oz of name brand Baileys on the rocks. A lovely breakfast beverage if you are so inclined.
So, if you are so in need of a get away, I would jump at the chance to nab this little bargain and enjoy a late winter Vegas vacation.
For comparison sake, I also checked Westjetvacations.com for identical dates and hotels, but leaving from Winnipeg airport. To stay at the Tropicana would be $1133.32 (taxes in) per couple. They have Vdara listed at $1264.66. So, to fly Allegiant from Minot would save you $366.36 on a vacation to Vdara. That seems to be a good chunk of change which you might prefer to spend on meals or in the casino.
If you choose to go to Las Vegas, enjoy! I'd love to hear about it, but.... what happens in Vegas - stays in Vegas!!!

Cheap Getaways with Allegiant
Allegiant Air has made an impact on the Canadian and Northern USA travel market with its border town getaways. All along the US/Canadian border Allegiant Air has been popping up and establishing themselves at secondary or small market airports. For example, the Grand Forks airport in North Dakota, or the Bellingham Airport in Washington state.
Allegiant has very select routes, but does them well. They have negotiated excellent package rates with hotels at their destinations. I'll use the Phoenix/Mesa Arizona example. Allegiant flies into the Mesa Williams Gateway Airport, rather than the area's major PHX (Phoenix Sky Harbour). It is a super easy airport to navigate and is an ideal jumping off point for a relaxing desert vacation.
Depending on the season, Allegiant will fly between 2 and 4 times a week between Grand Forks, and Phoenix/Mesa. I've seen one way flights as low as $39.99, but they do go up in price to around the $300 mark. It just depends on supply and demand. Remember, around school and traditional calendar holidays, flights will always be more expensive.
One current example (Oct 27th) is for a mini vacation in early December. Two adults can travel from Grand Forks, to Phoenix/Mesa for $775. That's all taxes included, airfare and hotel for 4 nights at the Arizona Resort & Conference Centre. It's not a 4 star hotel, but Allegiant does recommend it and it certainly does have a good location and pool. However, if you would prefer to go high end. The iconic Arizona Biltmore (A Waldorf Astoria Hotel) is just $500 per person or $1037 per couple, all in.
Yup, $500 for a quick trip or sanity saver as I call them.
Allegiant flies to Orlando FL, Phoenix/Mesa AZ and Las Vegas NV pir of Grand Forks. I should note that in Florida they use the secondary airport at Sanford which is over an hour from Disneyworld, but still a substantial savings over flying into MCO (Orlando International) with a bigger airline.
In Las Vegas Allegiant has space on the tarmac at THE Las Vegas airport. (LAS - McCarran International.) So with this destination and Allegiant, you're already a winner because you will save money over the bigger airlines and arrive in exactly the same spot.
As a matter of fact, you could take your sweetheart to Vegas February 11-16th, 2012 for $950 a couple (all in) and stay at the fabulous Monte Carlo. For just a few more dollars you could stay at Paris, Planet Hollywood or TI (Treasure Island).
Allegiant flies modern, first class planes. Depending on the model, they hold between 80 & 120 passengers, so popular dates/flights tend to fill up quick.
Florida is the newest destination for flights originating in Grand Forks. Minot does not yet offer Florida as a destination. However, as Allegiant has so far committed to fly the GF to Sanford/Orlando route from November 17th 2011 to May 15, 2012 with the possibility of becoming a permanent route. This is AMAZING news for area residents who may wish to take the family to Disneyworld. It could save you 20 percent or more over the current cost of a Disney vacation. I will follow up and write a column on this soon.
One quick example. Grand Forks to Sanford/Orlando November 24th to December 1st 2011, for 2 adults $984 all in. That's a whole week in Florida for less than $500 per person, including air, hotel and taxes. That would be to stay at the Wyndham Lake Buena Visa Resort in the Downtown Disney area. This hotel is a Disney partner hotel (but not on-site) and does indeed offer Disney character breakfasts, and shuttles to the park. It is also newly renovated. To stay the aforementioned dates, as a family of 4 with 2 children under 10 would cost $1425 all in. Now, of course park passes, food etc would be an extra charge, but this is an EXCELLENT start to an inexpensive family vacation in sunny Florida.
I personally have flown Allegiant and would do it again. (Allegiant.com) I just wouldn't check any bags. They have big time add on costs at Allegiant for checked bags, priority seating etc. But a savvy traveller can save money with Allegiant and get to the popular destination quicker than originally thought possible.

Crazy trip bargain
Stumbled upon this one last night. Fly from Grand Forks, ND to Mesa AZ from Sept 4-8 for $55 each way. Or, package it with one of the most amazing, prestigious hotels (Arizona Biltmore, Waldorf Astoria) AND a car rental.... $750. That's air, hotel, car & taxes included for 2 people. OMG. If I didn't have kids heading back to school, you know where I'd be.
Go to Allegiant Air's web site. Arizona sale is on to June 20.
